Oxford University Hotels

Oxford's winding alleyways, streets and arcades are crammed with boutiques, theatres, cinemas and cultural events you might expect in one of the world's leading centres of learning.

Its University has educated some of the world’s greatest leaders such as Indira Ghandi, Bill Clinton and Margaret Thatcher.

Oxford University is the oldest Universities in the world and to date one of the best and most prestigious. The University of Oxford comprises 38 Colleges and their quads and buildings can be found all over the city.  The colleges embody the academic tradition of Oxford which goes back as far as 700 years.

Today the university has some 22,000 students, drawn from almost every country in the world, studying the entire range of subjects from theology and archaeology to medicine and computer science.

Any roll call of its alumni testifies to its place as a magnet for high achievers.

Their impressive record features 50 winners of the Nobel Prize, 27 British prime ministers - that’s not to mention 17 cardinals, 89 archbishops and a host of eminent academics and authors. Richard Burton and Hugh Grant are among the many actors to have studied at Oxford and the University has produced 120 Olympic gold medallists.

Spend a day exploring and walk in the footsteps of many famous figures and great minds who studied at the University. Take in incredible sights such as the Gothic masterpiece of the Divinity School at The Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre, a Christopher Wren masterpiece completed in 1688.

Lewis Carroll wrote Alice in Wonderland while teaching mathematics at the University; J.R.R.Tolkien, author of Lord of the Rings, studied here and went on to become Merton Professor of Language and Literature.

Fortunately, most are routinely open to the public. Check for opening times and further details here.
