For a quintessential staycation in the city this summer, look no further than Oxford. Although it’s best known for its spires, literary greats and the iconic buildings of Oxford University, the city is also buzzing, charming and romantic. It offers plenty to do to keep you entertained. We’ve rounded up some of the best ways to make your summer staycation anything but ordinary.

Explore on foot

You can explore the city with one of the many guided tours on offer, or escape to nature with a daytrip near Oxford.  We also recommend heading to one of “Oxford’s oldest monuments” Port Meadow, just a few minutes’ walk from the city. The flat meadow sits beside the River Thames and is home to wildflowers, wetland flora, wild ponies, cows and many species of birds. Refuel at one of the two pubs nearby or pack a picnic and watch the sunset.

Punt

There is simply nothing more charming nor traditional than punting on the River Cherwell. Head along to Cherwell Boathouse where you can hire handcrafted punts made on site, (rowing boats and Canadian canoes also available), for an hour or a full day. Grab a bite to eat from the Teahut and don’t forget to bring the Pimm’s for your punt!

Swim

Make the most of the summer sun and relax at one of the two outdoor pools in Oxford.  Hinksey Heated Outdoor Pool is just a short walk from the city, or head to Woodstock Open Air Pool close by to Blenheim Palace.

Rainy days

As we know too well, the weather is always a talking point on this small island, so where to spend those rainy days?

Besides the many museums, exploring the University buildings and heading to one of Britain’s best libraries – the Bodleian, Oxford is also home to a board games café. Thirsty Meeples Board Game Café offers even the biggest of board game fans a touch of green-eyed monster, stocking over 2,500 games you’re bound to find a new favourite. They even stock many of the games for purchase so you can continue the game back at the hotel.

Come rain or shine, there is always time for a spot of shopping! Alice fans you won’t want to miss The Alice Shop, which sells everything Alice from trinkets, to jewellery to homeware. This shop was also visited by the real Alice and even featured in the book, Through the Looking Glass. If you’re an avid bookworm, then head to one the iconic Blackwell’s Bookshop to pick up a new novel or re-visit one of the many classics inspired by this quintessential city… maybe you’ll be inspired to write your own!
