How to Spend a Day in Oxford

With its streets lined with centuries-old buildings, leafy parks, and a rich academic heritage, spending a day in Oxford is like stepping back in time while still being surrounded by the vibrancy of a bustling city.

Whether you’re an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or just someone seeking a charming day out, Oxford can be molded to suit your interests perfectly.

From morning till evening, here’s how we recommend you spend the perfect day in the iconic city of Oxford:

8:30 AM: Breakfast at The Vaults & Garden Café

Begin your day with a delightful breakfast at The Vaults & Garden Café, just a charming 7-minute stroll from our hotel in Oxford and nestled beside the iconic Radcliffe Camera.

This café, set in the heart of Oxford, has a warm and inviting atmosphere – ideal for starting your morning on the right note.

Choose a hearty traditional English breakfast or opt for something lighter like a fresh pastry and coffee. The stunning views of the historic Radcliffe Camera make for a picturesque backdrop to your meal.

While you’re there, be sure to capture some photos of this architectural gem!

9:30 AM: Visit the Oxford Botanic Garden

After breakfast, take a 7-minute stroll to the Oxford Botanic Garden, the oldest in the UK. Founded in 1621, this beautifully maintained garden is a peaceful retreat with an impressive collection of plants from all over the world.

Wander through the glasshouses filled with exotic plants or enjoy the tranquillity of the walled garden, which blooms with seasonal flowers year-round.

Visiting early ensures a more peaceful experience, as the garden tends to get busier later in the day. We highly recommend booking your visit in advance to make the most of this beautiful space.

10:45 AM: Climb the University Church of St Mary the Virgin Tower

After strolling through the stunning gardens, head back towards the Radcliffe Camera to the University Church of St Mary the Virgin. Climb the narrow staircase to the top of the tower for panoramic views of the city’s “Dreaming Spires“.

This is a perfect photo opportunity to capture a full city view of Oxford.

In case you need a pitstop, the church is just a 7-minute stroll from our hotel in Oxford.

11:30 AM: Explore Christ Church College or Magdalen College

After having visited the church or if you stopped off at our hotel for a pitstop, it’s time to explore one of Oxford’s renowned colleges. Christ Church College is the most famous, boasting grand architecture and connections to Harry Potter. However, if you prefer a quieter and more serene atmosphere, Magdalen College is a great alternative with beautiful gardens and a deer park.

1:00 PM: Lunch at The Covered Market

After your college visit, head to The Covered Market, a lively marketplace that has been operating since the 1770s. You’ll find a range of food options, from gourmet sandwiches to Oxford’s famous sausages.

Grab something to eat and explore the quirky shops selling everything from handmade crafts to fresh produce.

2:00 PM: Visit the Ashmolean Museum

Next, take a 6-minute walk to the Ashmolean Museum – Britain’s first public museum.

The Ashmolean is home to an incredible collection ranging from ancient Egyptian artifacts, contemporary art to Renaissance masterpieces.

You could easily spend hours here, but an hour or so gives you enough time to see the highlights.

3:30 PM: Stroll Through University Parks and Go Punting

After soaking up some culture, enjoy a leisurely walk in University Parks, which are nearby to the museum.

If the weather is good, make your way to Magdalen Bridge Boathouse afterwards to try your hand at punting. Renting a punt and gliding along the River Cherwell is a classic Oxford experience. You can steer the boat yourself or hire someone to do it for you while you relax and enjoy the views.

Two boats punt down a river under a historic bridge with houses facing them on one side and trees on the other.

4:45 PM: Afternoon Tea or Refreshments at The Rose Oxford

After your river adventure, take a break for afternoon tea at The Rose Oxford. This charming spot serves traditional afternoon tea with freshly baked scones, clotted cream, and an assortment of finger sandwiches. It’s the perfect way to recharge after a busy afternoon.

6:30 PM: Explore Oxford’s Hidden Gems

Take some time to wander through Oxford’s quaint lanes, like the Bridge of Sighs on New College Lane or the quiet alleys near the Radcliffe Square. You’ll also pass by The Eagle and Child pub, famously associated with J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis.

7:30 PM: Dinner at a Historic Pub

For dinner, head to one of Oxford’s iconic pubs, like The Turf Tavern. Nestled down St. Helen’s Passage, this hidden gem is a cosy setting, serving up classic British pub classics alongside an impressive drinks menu.

Whether you’re in the mood for traditional comfort food or a perfectly poured pint, this spot captures the essence of Oxford’s vibrant pub culture.

9:00 PM: Evening Entertainment at the Sheldonian Theatre

If you’re up for it, catch an evening concert or performance at the Sheldonian Theatre. Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, this stunning venue often hosts classical music concerts and other cultural events.

It’s a fitting way to end your day surrounded by Oxford’s rich history and culture.

With this itinerary, you’ll have experienced Oxford’s academic splendour, cultural treasures, and charming atmosphere – all within a single day. Whether you’re exploring hidden corners or enjoying iconic landmarks, Oxford leaves a lasting impression on every visitor.
